On Saturday 23 June, Junior racers competed at Snowplanet in the first of the Interfield races for the 2012 season. This was part of the Ski Connect Northern Series. Athletes raced the giant slalom course twice, with the combined times giving their overall score.
The youngest podium place-getters were E1 (born 2003 or younger) girl Tess Porter and boy Harrison Messenger both of Kristin School, E2 (born 2001 – 2002) girl Francesca Masfen, St Cuthberts, boy Ethan Baxter-McAsey, St Josephs Takapuna , K1 (born 1999, 2000) girl Hazel Wells, Diocesan School and Theo Gilbertson of Saint Kentigens.
In the K2 category, for competitors born in 1997 or older, Alex Jefferson, Kristin School was the fastest girl over the two timed runs, with Josh Reilly, taking fastest combined times of the day of 27.67 seconds in the K2 15 and 16-year-old age bracket. Two Snowvision McKenzie Ski Talent Scholarships were handed out by Fiona Stevens and these went to Alex Jefferson from Kristin School and Alan Nisbet from Sacred Heart.
The next North Island race will be held at Turoa on Saturday the 11th of August. This series is run by Northern Snow Sports. The overall Ski Connect Junior Interfield title being awarded to the E category winners based on points from 2 best results.
