DAVOS, Switzerland (18 February 2013) – New Zealand cross country skiers, Andrew Pohl (Dunedin) and Nils Koon (Waitati) have put a couple of solid days’ racing under their belts ahead of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships that open in Val di Fiemme, Italy on Wednesday.
Pohl and Koon competed in the men’s 15km free technique competition at the World Cup in Davos, Switzerland on Sunday 17 February. Pohl finished in 71st place 11% and just under 4mins behind the winner, Johan Olsson from Sweden, with Koon another 13sec behind in 72nd .
With the World Championships only days away the Davos World Cup attracted all the sport’s big names, giving the New Zealand contingent an opportunity to test themselves against the best.
“I think this bodes well for our upcoming races at the World Championships in Val de Femme, Italy,” said Pohl.
In the women's race Sarah Murphy had a tough day, finishing 61st at just under 6min behind the winner.
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships will see 12 days of action-packed competitions, featuring 21 medal events in Cross-Country Skiing, Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined at the two stadiums at Lago di Tesero and Predazzo.
