Junior World Championships Team Named

Snow Sports New Zealand has named six athletes to the 2022 FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships Team. Most of these athletes will represent New Zealand in Panorama, Canada from March 1-9, 2022.

This world class event brings together the best junior FIS Alpine racers (born between 2001 and 2005), providing experience and international exposure to athletes identified as high-performance development level athletes.

The women named are Alice Robinson and Mikayla Smyth. The men named are Keir Roberts, Will Cashmore, Sam Hadley and Calder Bain. Alice and Keir will not be taking up their spots due to prior commitments.

The team is coming into Junior Worlds off the back of some fantastic results this 2022 season.

Mikayla has skied herself onto four FIS Slalom podiums this season – a 1st and 2nd at the Steamboat National Junior Races in December and a 2nd and 3rd at the FIS races at Spirit Mountain in February.

Calder has achieved three top ten FIS race finishes across both Slalom and Giant Slalom this season, while Sam and Will have both achieved top ten results in FIS Slalom races.

“We are proud to announce the New Zealand team for the 2022 FIS Alpine Junior World Championships at Panorama, British Columbia in Canada. These hard working young athletes have been offshore racing in Canada, The United States and Europe since November hoping to earn a place on the Team at this pinnacle Alpine event. We wish them all the best in Canada as they compete amongst the best Junior FIS Alpine racers in the world.” – Jono Howson, Head of Alpine, Snow Sports NZ

The 2022 Junior Worlds will once again include downhill, alpine combined, and team events, along with super-G, giant slalom, and slalom events for both men and women. Live timing will be provided by the International Ski Federation (FIS).
