Breckenridge, USA (9 December 2015) - NZ freeskier Janina Kuzma (Wanaka) has earned a spot in the women's freeski halfpipe finals at the prestigious Dew Tour event which got underway at Breckenridge Ski Resort in the USA today.
Today's semi-finals followed a unique format whereby the competitors each had two runs to post their best score after which the top five athletes progressed through to finals. Sixth to 11th placed competitors then dropped in reverse order for the “Last Chance Qualifier” - one run where the highest scorer joined the other five athletes in qualifying for finals.
Janina qualified in fifth place with a new seven-hit run that continued the technical difficulty progression that she has made during the southern hemisphere season. Her new run sequence included a new trick - a right 720 - which she landed today for the first time in the northern hemisphere.
With mild temperatures and good visibility making for perfect competition conditions today, the sixteen female competitors all put on strong performances with plenty of high end trickery.
The finals on Friday (Saturday NZT) will be a two-run affair.
"Janina is looking forward to mixing up her run to showcase bigger amplitude in the finals and has a new trick up her sleeve which will be a welcome addition if conditions allow," says her coach Tom Willmott.
Joining her will be Annalisa Drew (USA), Ayana Onozuka (JPN), Brita Sigourney (USA), Cassie Sharpe (CAN) and Roz Groenewoud (CAN).
